Making Better Choices Through The Year (& A Giveaway)

I have been participating in the Blog Forward 2014 Challenge hosted by Zone PerfectIn mid-January I wrote a post on my other blog, TrailCooking, about creating and making goals I could stick with – and that would be healthier for me in the long run. My goals I listed were ones where I would be ready for the outdoors once Spring came. Overall I am happy with how my goals are going, but I also realize that it isn’t something you can quit doing. Anything I pick up has to become a way of life. And over the past few years, we have done well, at least to me we have. Our way of eating has changed so much!

Postable - Swaptions

I hope you enjoy the tips below!

Postable - Beverage Swaps

Drinks have been and will probably always be a problem for me. I “love” people who are “I JUST LOVE water!”. Sure……but I have noticed that a tiny bit of lemonade can flavor a huge glass of water and I’ll happily drink unsweetened ice tea all day. Now giving up on lattes? No. Not going to happen ;-)

Postable - Condiment Swaps

These tips? Oh yes. I could eat mashed avocado on toasted bread for lunch all the time!

Postable - Cooking Swaps

All 3 of these we enjoy doing. Just say sunflowers instead of walnuts.

Postable - Entree Swaps

I’ll admit I am not a fan of spaghetti squash, and I would suggest beans instead of meat ;-)

Postable - Sides Swaps

All 4 of these I love. Color and great nutritional stats. I love doing mashed potatoes with half potatoes/half cauliflower.

ZonePerfect is sponsoring a giveaway for my readers, of a portable power charger. If you follow my writings on my other blog, you will know how much I love these power “sticks” – there is something about knowing you can get outside, enjoy the sun and breathing fresh air – and not have to worry about using up all your mobile phone charge because you took too many photos, used the GPS in it too much and so on. I love being able to plug my phone into these and quickly I have a charge. As long as your phone takes a standard mini-USB, it will fit. Stay out longer, and have more fun!

  1. Love all your swaps listed here! My BF is Italian, so I haven’t convinced him of the spaghetti squash swap yet… but a lot of the other ones I sneak into his food :)

You have lots of good ideas! It is so easy and delicious to eat healthy! No need for all this other crap! :)

  3. I don’t swap much–I just use fresh, whole, healthy foods. (And if you make your own breadcrumbs, you don’t get all the salt and preservatives!)

  4. I love all the tips here. Hoping to find more Freezer Bag Cooking tips.

I had something similar to this, but it was so heavy I gave it away… hoping to win so I can try this one out!

  6. Um, I feel bad now… I am one of “those” people who truly LOVES water! I know, I’m a freak ;) But I do! And, I love portable chargers and need a million of them because somehow they seem to “walk away” from my bags and my car… Thanks for the great giveaway! Love the swap ideas, too — so handy!

  7. I love all the swaps, but I admit some are easier than others. I have one for you… Chaga & Dandelion Root tea instead of coffee. Look it up ;)

  8. I love the swap of sour cream for greek yogurt, though sometimes I also just use tofu, and mashed cauliflower or used quinoa several times. I hadn’t thought of rolled oats for breadcrumbs, that’s a good one! I admit I didn’t used to like tofu, but the really fresh tofu you can get here in Portland is surprisingly good that I might even snack on a broken large chopped piece!

I put beans (black or pinto) in everything since they are full of fiber, protein and pretty cheap to buy. I even found a black bean brownie recipe that tasted great!
