My Mother’s Kitchen: Gingerbread Cutouts

One more recipe from my collection of my Mom’s recipe box –

Haven’t a clue where this recipe came from but it was one my Mom must have clipped out. I can remember though attaching it to the index card with tape for her. I was in my teens when she wanted to clean up her recipe collection and set me to do just that!

These make fun Christmas time cookies and are easily decorated.

Gingerbread Cut-outs


  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup dark molasses
  • 2 Tbsp vinegar (apple cider or white)
  • 1½ tsp baking soda
  • 5 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground cloves (can be less if you don’t like strong clove flavor)


Cream butter; add sugar gradually and beat in. Beat in egg, molasses and vinegar.

Sift the dry ingredients together, blend into the wet.. Cover tightly and let chill for a couple of hours.

Roll out to 1/8 to 1/4″ thickness on a floured surface. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters, lift up gently and put on parchment paper lined cookie sheets.

Bake at 375° for 5 to 15 minutes (will depend on how thick you rolled out the dough).

Let cool on racks, decorate with frosting and candies as desired.

  1. Isn’t it neat… you updated her clipping onto a card… now it’s been updated onto a computer website.. something we could never have dreamed of in those days! I wonder what’s next!?
